The Family Chore App Where One Person Pays and Everyone Else Is Free

By Johnpaul Mbagwu, Founder of Houseloop

Here is a small pricing detail that quietly decides whether a family app ever works: who pays. Most task and chore apps charge per person, per seat. That model makes sense for a company buying software for employees. It is exactly backwards for a household, where one person is usually doing all the convincing to get everyone else to even try it.

The per-seat trap

Think about how adoption actually goes. You find the app, you set it up, and now you have to talk your partner, your roommates, or your teenagers into using it too. That is already the hard part. Add “and it costs five dollars a month each” and you have handed every reluctant person a perfect reason to opt out. The one feature a family app cannot afford to charge for is the second, third, and fourth person, because those people are the entire point.

What to look for: per-household pricing

The model that fits a home is simple. One person pays, and everyone else in the household uses it free. You are not buying seats, you are unlocking the household. It removes the single biggest reason the rest of your family says no, and it matches how the value actually works, which is that a chore app does nothing until more than one person is in it. If you are comparing options, this is worth checking before anything else, because an app that nickel-and-dimes each member will never get past you.

How Houseloop prices it

We made Houseloop bill per household on purpose. You pay once, and you add your partner, your kids, or your roommates at no extra cost. We would rather you get four people actually using it than charge you for the privilege of recruiting them. The whole product depends on the household being on it together, so charging per person would be charging you to make our own app work.

The honest version

Pricing is not usually the exciting part of choosing an app, but for a family tool it is load-bearing. Per-seat pricing fights the exact thing you are trying to do, which is get everyone on board. One payer, free for the rest, is the model that gets out of your way.

Stop being the only one who remembers

Houseloop captures what the home needs, hands it to the right person, and does the reminding so the load stops landing on you.
