FamilyWall Alternatives: What Actually Changes If You Leave

By The Houseloop Team, Houseloop

The best FamilyWall alternative depends on why you are leaving. If you only ever used the calendar, TimeTree or the free shared calendar in Apple Family Sharing is enough. If chores and follow-through were the problem, you need a task app with assignment and reminders. One caution worth knowing first: Cozi, the usual recommendation, shares a parent company with FamilyWall, so moving there does not change vendors.

You did the hard part already. You picked an app, talked your partner into it, got a teenager to install it, and put a year of the family's life inside. Now something has gone wrong enough that you are searching for the exit, and the results are ten near identical lists written by other family apps. We write one of those apps, so start with that disclosure, and then here is the thing none of the other pages will tell you.

Why do people leave FamilyWall?

Most people leave over price placement, not missing features. FamilyWall's free tier gives a whole family a shared 100MB of storage, and the pieces you probably assumed were core sit behind Premium: Google and Outlook calendar sync, meal planning, real-time location, finance tracking, timetables and calendar URL subscriptions. FamilyWall's site lists Premium at $4.99 a month or $44.99 a year with a 30 day free trial, and that is the number every comparison page quotes. It is not the number everyone pays: the App Store listing prices the monthly in-app purchase at $7.99, so buying inside the iPhone app costs about 60 percent more per month than the site implies. Check what your own store shows rather than the marketing page. The second reason is reliability. App store reviewers on both platforms report notifications going quiet, calendar sync lagging, and events going missing, including on paid accounts. Those are user reports rather than a measured failure rate, but they are the pattern people describe when they leave.

Is Cozi really a different company from FamilyWall?

No, and this is the fact worth carrying into your decision. FamilyWall was acquired by OurFamilyWizard in June 2024, and in September 2024 OurFamilyWizard launched a parent company, In Tandem, that now owns OurFamilyWizard, Cozi, FamilyWall and Custody Navigator. Nearly every article on this keyword recommends Cozi as the safe default, without mentioning that it is a sibling product. It also has its own direction of travel: Cozi Gold runs about $39 a year, the free tier is ad supported, and a May 2024 change limited free users to roughly a 30 day agenda window. If part of why you are leaving is that a free tier narrowed under you after you had moved in, Cozi is a lateral move. We went deeper on that trade in our Cozi comparison.

Which FamilyWall alternative fits the reason you are leaving?

Route by your actual grievance instead of by a popularity ranking. Four common exits, four different answers:

  • You will not pay for calendar sync. Use what you already own. Apple Family Sharing covers six members and adds a shared Family calendar and reminder list at no cost, and a Google family group auto-creates a shared Family calendar. TimeTree is the dedicated option, free with ads, with Premium around $4.49 a month or $44.99 a year billed per user, so it scales badly across a household.
  • The interface overwhelms your partner. The fix is fewer surfaces, not more features. Pick something your least enthusiastic family member can open once a day without a tour.
  • Chores never actually get done. That is a distribution problem, not a display problem. A grid of events shows what is happening; it does not decide who owns it or confirm it happened.
  • You want out of the portfolio. Then Cozi is off the list by definition, and you are shopping independent vendors, Houseloop included. We are flagging ourselves so you can weigh it accordingly.

What does Houseloop do that a shared calendar does not?

Houseloop is built around follow-through rather than a calendar grid. Research published in the Journal of Marriage and Family in December 2024, covering 3,000 US parents, found mothers managing 71 percent of household mental load tasks against fathers' 45 percent, and sociologist Allison Daminger's work indicates the imbalance concentrates in anticipating what is coming and monitoring that it got done, while deciding is already fairly even. A shared calendar mostly helps the part that was least broken, which is the gap our mental load app page is really about. So Houseloop gives you tasks with a real handoff and reminders that reach the person assigned, routines, a shared grocery list that adds a baby supply back when it runs low, and a baby tracker for feeds, diapers, sleep and shared night duty. Our own disclosure, since we just picked at someone else's pricing: new households can create up to three active tasks and invite one other person before starting the trial. Plus is $7.99 a month with a 7 day free trial on the monthly plan, or $69.99 a year with no trial, and it is billed once per household, so one person pays and everyone else joins free. Invited guests can view the whole shared workspace read only. The iPhone app is live, it runs in any web browser including on Android, and a native Android app is on the way to Google Play.

Who it is not for

Skip Houseloop if you want a free app for everyday use. The free plan is a small starter, three active tasks and two people, not a permanent home, so if you are leaving FamilyWall purely to stop paying, the honest answer is Apple Family Sharing, a Google family calendar, or TimeTree, not us. Skip it if you need continuous family location sharing. Houseloop’s optional device-local arrival or departure reminders require a supported installed build and permissions; they do not track or share anyone’s movements. Skip it if the whole family lives on Android and you want a store install today rather than a browser tab. And genuinely consider staying put: if your FamilyWall Premium works, sync is fine, and your extended family is already on it, re-onboarding everyone costs more than the annoyance you are trying to fix.

Whatever you pick, do it in this order: save or screenshot what you need, move one month of the calendar rather than a whole year, run both apps in parallel for two weeks, then cancel Premium in the App Store or Google Play before deleting the account. Deleting the app does not stop the billing, and account deletion is permanent.

Questions

Is Cozi owned by the same company as FamilyWall?
Yes. FamilyWall was acquired by OurFamilyWizard in June 2024, and in September 2024 OurFamilyWizard launched a parent company called In Tandem, which now owns OurFamilyWizard, Cozi, FamilyWall and Custody Navigator. A move from FamilyWall to Cozi changes the app you open, not the company setting prices, roadmaps or data policy.
Is FamilyWall free?
FamilyWall has a free tier, but it is capped: a whole family shares 100MB of storage, against 25GB on Premium. Google and Outlook calendar sync, meal planning, real-time location, finance tracking and calendar URL subscriptions are all Premium. FamilyWall's own site lists Premium at $4.99 a month or $44.99 a year with a 30 day free trial, but the App Store listing prices the monthly in-app purchase at $7.99, so subscribing inside the iPhone app costs about 60 percent more than the website figure for the same tier. Check the number your own store shows before you buy.
How do I get my data out of FamilyWall before I switch?
Plan for manual work. FamilyWall documents ICS calendar import rather than a one-click full export, and on the free tier an ICS import stops after the first 30 events. We have not found a documented export path for lists, recipes, photos or message history, so assume anything outside the calendar has to be copied by hand. Account deletion permanently removes the personal data associated with it, so move what you need first.
Does deleting the FamilyWall app cancel Premium?
No. FamilyWall Premium bought inside the app is billed through the App Store or Google Play, so removing the app leaves the subscription running. Cancel it in your store account settings under subscriptions, then delete the app. Do the cancellation after you have exported anything you still want, because account deletion is permanent.
What is the best free FamilyWall alternative?
For a genuinely free replacement, use what your phones already include. Apple Family Sharing covers six members and automatically adds a shared Family calendar and a shared Family reminder list at no extra cost, and a Google family group auto-creates a shared Family calendar anyone in the group can edit. TimeTree is free with ads if you want a dedicated app instead.
